The first 200 get 20% off the annual Brilliant subscription! brilliant.org/MarcusHouse/. Today we are talking about how Starship’s low-cost vision to send mass into orbit will change the lives for everyone to at least some degree. How are SpaceX intending to lower that cost? Why does it matter? Well... recent funding news for SpaceX provides incredibly beneficial resources to start the engineering involved in a huge part of this technology. That’s right… the systems needed to refill starship with Liquid Methane and Oxygen while in orbit. We also can’t forget the amazing work on the Raptor Engine. The complex engine that drives this beast. Starship will change everything if it works as planned.

I think NASA and RussCosmos (I think that is the name of the state sponsored "fly me to space" Rissuian company that puts toether the Russian/American flights to the space staton. If Elon Musk keeps going "balls out" like he has been doing, then the ISS is just going to become a high-flying piss stop for the Space-X crews. GO ELON MUSK!!! Pur all the governments and their wasteful spending to shame.

If they first send the starship to the moon before they try to go to the mars, will they orbit the earth once or twice to build up speed and slingshot to the moon? Will they mostly just drift to the moon. Is it possible they can burn the engines longer to get to the moon faster?

Clearly, I didn't study enough math in school so here is my question. If it takes almost all the fuel a ship can hold to get into earth's orbit, then how does a reusable rocket suddenly carry so much extra fuel into orbit as to launch Elon to Mars and back? How long did it take before Elon could even drive his Tesla across country and back?? We will get to Mars about the same time Indonesia has safe flights.

I wonder if it would be possible to make a fuel refinery in orbit ? That'd be really convenient providing you can make the fuel just from air. It would be possible to have something in geosynchronous orbit that has a super long pipeline pointed down to where air could be gathered wouldn't it? I'm picturing like a reverse space elevator type design..... Well it's fun to think of ideas anyway.... Lol

I'm beginning to reach the inescapable conclusion that, although 'we' currently cannot avoid usind solid state and liquid state rockets to get 'stuff' off earth into orbit, I beleive we need to visit alternate fuel sources for travel between earth and other planets and so far only nuclear stands out as an option

Rockets don't work in space; ie they cannot start from relative zero in a vaccuum. They only work because of the lift they create IN ATMOSPHERE and the inertia from that liftoff. Hence Ion drives.

I have a theory, but I need practical info to draw a conclusion. What is the minimum altitude that Starship can reenter Earth atmosphere to for aereal refueling? If the were the case, like the SR-71 Blackbird, why not refuel at high altitude before exiting the atmosphere......or..... Use the solid fuel boosters, used by the shuttle during launch to reduce the amount of onboard fuel used to get the refueler out of the atmosphere.

Would it be possible to put Super Heavy into orbit, refuel it, and then rendezvous with a Starship, and then use Super Heavy to propel Starship much faster to Mars? Also, would it not be beneficial to build a Space Station/Refueling Depot that Starships are constantly filling, so that a Starship destined to go to Mars would not have to sit around in orbit for multiple refilling missions, but once in orbit just dock to the refueling station and completely refuel quickly to leave for Mars?...

Was it discussed to launch a disposable dump tank with propellant to orbit in advance to refill starship to full at once right at its departure from earth orbit? It possibly will provide extra cargo weight at launch as we won’t need to have it full.

why do all this. It just doesn't make any sense. Hasn't anyone seen star trek? You build interplanetary vehicles in space, not on earth. They dont need the same structure to handle space as they do handling the launch from earth to space. Build something HUGE in space that can handle a vacuum, with a small lander that can handle the tiny atmosphere of mars. Give the interplanetary vehicle big space engines, and give the lander the O2/H engines.

Hello all, I have a question. I'm not sure if it was ever talked about. The landing gears/legs. I feel that they might not be able to keep starship upright. It looks like they can easily tip over once they land on Mars. As it ever been brought up about having the same legs as the boosters. When not in use, they are flushed along the sides. When deployed they have such a wide spread base. Harder to tip over. Even with Mars heavy winds. Thanks

@ashleigholivia3 I've given space X and Elon a better more sustainable option that you are welcome to explore on twitter. I'm talking on there about an aerogel jacket like condom for the BFS. Rather than tiles like he is considering the aerogel jackets would be cheaper, reusable and easier to install. I also talk about a Pre BFS stage Lunar launch pad and services modules which are interchangeable. The lunar modules are giant pads, one version fitted with a crane and docking port. The starship fitted with a docking port can dock with the crane and then brought down to the lunar surface, saving fuel and the possibly damage caused by the decent rockets and ascent explosion from the bfs. These modules will be fitted differently as one site with have multiple BFS lunar launch pad and services modules one fitted with an autonomous methane mine from the methane found in the craters, other gases can be extracted along with minerals on this module. All modules can be interconnected by inflatable corridors and airlocks whilst one of the lunar launch pad and services modules will have a large medium and multiple small autonomous 3d printers and inflatable biodome. Using helium to inflate the biodome (habitat) the 3d printers and cranes automatically get to work on construction of the required building components. The lunar launch pad and services module could be rated for passengers in the future so that entire workforces can be launched with a module to work on the already now fully pressurised, airlocked habitats ready for humans to come and start unpacking their various buildings and science equipment already sent up on these ore BFS stages Can easily be launched using falcon heavies and other heavy lifting rockets. We already have designs done in the past in how to launch round objects like large mirrors. Ok still with me? These pads can become enclosed with opening airlocks eventually allowing for the installation of new aerogel jackets on the way back to earth. This is all achievable in the next 12-18 months if I can find the right minded people to help bring this to life. I'm going for a private enterprise UK business that in hoping Elon will back and we can sell these lunar launch pad and services modules as packages for other agencies and private enterprise to buy which will include a starter pack of a single lunar launch pad and services module one BFS with your team and of course further real estate on the rocket if available can be sold commercially I would build a team of like minded people, sell a lunar launch pad and services modules including the BFS launch on crows funding, maybe as a collaborative they can build the first lunar hotel for visitors. Testing and building all this tech will allow us to then once the concept is working and we have successfully got 4 on the lunar surface we will escalate our launches and start landing them at requested sites on Mars ready for a martian colony. A martian colony than can be supplied by the moon in as little as 5 years we can literally have multiple cities on the moon as long as Elon and space X stay on target. I believe we can get the initial lunar launch pad and services module done and in the lunar surface within 24 months. I believe we can have other module designs such as a mining one ready within a few months after, multiple design teams would be working on the different modules and origami whilst keeping the same structural design. The one with a crane the first module, the crane can be fitted with solar panels, a solar shield and a meteoriod shield to protect the cities. This is all tech we have now and this would make Artemis redundant. Get in touch if you see a vision

Marcus; would be nice if you had a dedicated CSsun channel for creative ideas only in the comments section. They would be limited to being relevant and linked to the topic you discuss in the Mother Video. If that makes any sense? So, You have: Mother YT video --> linked to ---> idea comments for Mother video. This way engineers stuck on a problem can get brain-tickled on how to think about solutions. For this video; I would comment that: while graphene tubes might not be ready to send ships to space they might be able to send fuel to a geosynchronous tank in space.

@Marcus House So how is it now ok to survive on Mars? All through school it was said that Mars has such a toxic poison atmosphere that it would kill any human within seconds. When did that change?

I was wondering, if they want to refuel in low earth orbit, why not just build a large sled tack on more equipment as well as extra fuel, building supplies, etc,. to give the new settlement a better chance to survive.

I appreciate these deep dives with details that aren't covered in other places and I'd love to see longer videos developed. Regarding delivering fuel to orbit, I'm curious what the physics and economics are of a three stage rocket like the Apollo missions used, but reusable. I'm sure that has been run on a Kerbal simulation and it'd be great to hear the results.

I really admire Elon Musk and have a lot of trust in him. He will make it happen Vs NASA. But I was wondering, going from Earth to Mars and live there, is like, leaving a lush green forest full of life and go to Sahara desert, to live there. This exploration is good for fun and obviously for science, but living there, doesn't make sense esp. at a great cost.

Imagine if there was an orbital service module. Maybe a cube that can dock 5 fuel tanks and one starship. It contains massive solar panels, Tesla batteries, and a big damn refrigerator. The starship tanks are super cooled and the fuel tank's CH4 and O2 tanks are heated ( the refrigerator pumps heat from one to the others). The LNG boils out of the fuel ships and condenses in the starship. Since the service module launches once and stores solar energy over time, the fueling happens fast and does not handicap the launch mass. I am an engineer who has been in the CNG/LNG business. It seriously saves launch mass because you do not need to use inertial transfer.

@Tornado In A Junkyard Do have some physics education myself. Feel free to go through it, but any mathematical formula does not prove whether the earth itself is moving or being still. There are also plenty of pictures of lakes showing completely still water, the centrifugal force, with it's centripetal acceleration should have moved the water in the lake a tiny bit, no?

@Per-Bjarne Mikalsen So now, when offered to be shown the calculations, you skip right into denial. Look, man, just because you close your ears and ignore the evidence, that doesn't make the evidence go away in a puff of magic.

Seven days since this was published and some significant developments have already occurred. One is the announcement by scientist at Stanford University that they have developed a way to create hydrogen from seawater. This application can be used on mars and is far more safe and cheaper than other methods used to produce hydrogen. It can use the Martian "salt" surface along with water to produce hydrogen. It is not pie in the sky but a working option. Methane is no longer the only option. The second development is the failure of the power component unit of the Orion capsule. If they use the known way to repair the unit it will take a year. If they try another option they are thinking about it will take at least six months and may not be possible. The third unlikely option is to go without redundancy. This will delay the Artemis program significantly and almost certainly the 2024 target. It could have far reaching implications and may cause for rethinking the project all together. I think it helps SpaceX and the citizens of the US.
