The shockwaves from a large rocket launch can damage the buildings if they are too close, and it's even worse if the rocket should happen to explode on the pad. A fully fuelled Saturn V contained about as much energy as a small nuclear bomb.

Wish saw this launch in real life, always wanted to. When was in Navy Bootcamp early 90s in Orlando Florida before its closing our company commander(drill instructor) had us all standing on the grinder at attention. He told us we were out there to watch the launch but he was a jerk and had us all standing the opposite direction at attention so we couldn’t see the launch itself and he could as he looked at us at muster. He wanted to make sure we kept our military bearing as they hyped what they saw in front of us and god forbid one of us turned around to look. But he did make us do a about face later just so we could see the trail the shuttle left going into the air to confirm he wasn’t lying to us it did actually launch. Little later think somewhere rt before they decommissioned the shuttle on the east coast of North Carolina I was able to sit on a beach with my now 5 kids at a bonfire had for us to watch a very rare time the shuttle was launched and flew directly over the area I lived over the outer banks in NC And we’re able to watch it fly streaming across the sky into its path into space over the ocean along the east coast.. was amazed how fast it flew from me side the horizontal to the other as we all sat there watching it go by. We were also lucky to have a few lower flying aircraft flying most likely overseas passenger planes going to Norfolk international airport but we could see the speed they were flying with their wing lights flashing low in the sky light and when we saw the speed the shuttle was moving as it flew past those almost now sitting still seemed aircraft blinking lights in the sky we were just in awe amazement. Knew I would be but to see it in your young children’s eyes with their friends we had there that night was even better experience for me. Really do wish I was able to make it to Florida to watch the shuttle truly launch from the pad and was and still upset they decommissioned em but I still cherish the few times I did get to see or be able to watch as it crossed the sky.
