You only get so many chances to roll the dice.. these are usually won by breakaways and you don't want to miss the chance to make the selection. Sometimes you make the right choice, sometimes not

He is making these smaller races training days for strade Bianci. If he wins it is epic! But now he has done some good preparations for the goals he has. Like the binc bank tour last year.

He doesn't need to win this race, he came here to get racing km's in his legs, to do a good training. He could sit in the peleton all day and win this race, but he much rather get a good workout in to get top form for more important races.

@mrm95 You are right, he rides like he does on XC and CX races, attacks and tries to keep the lead. His personal goal this year is the olympic gold medal, so i think he races and trains to be in peak form at that event and there he has the DUTCH team. I would like him to do what you say and get some wins this year in the TDF. I really want him to get Roubaix at some point, but he really needs to ride smart, have a strong team and get tons of luck.

@Andrew Davidson Remco and MvdP are completely different type of riders, so they need to ride differently. Remco is a ITT specialist. He has no real sprint. He is a GC rider. If he doesn't go from long way out and maintain a high thresh hold power, he won't win. MvdP has a very good sprint that is only beaten by pure sprinters (like Bennett, Gaviria in form, Groenewegen etc). So that is a tool MvdP can use, that Remco can't. In your example of Amstel, Mvdp made a stupid attack at around 63 km out which didn't work and which made him unable to go with the Fuglsang Alaphilippe move later. He was able to recover and drag them back also due to them playing possum at the very end for too long and getting caught by Kwiatkowski first and then the MvdP group later (Alaphilippe said their radios were not able to give them proper time gaps). That was incredible to watch, but utterly down to luck. He had actually screwed up the race tactically and got bailed out by his legs and the leaders taking too much time to initiate their sprints towards the end. I'm not saying he shouldn't attack. I'm saying he needs to pick his spots more diligently. He can't expect to go out from any distance and hold everyone off all the time. That will work sometimes, but sometimes you can let others attack and do the work and go with them. Especially when you don't have the team Alaphilippe has. Alaphilippe has the strongest 1 day team every year and that opens up plenty of tactical advantages for him. This is something Sagan had to learn as well. Check Sagan racing MSR and losing to Ciolek in comparison to him winning the WC's in Richmond. Being great isn't just about winning when you have the best legs. Being great is also winning when you don't.

Yes, it’s normal for former world champs to have the rainbow stripes on their collar and sleeves. The current world champion has the entire jersey with the rainbows on though.

@Slahudeen Hussain He certainly doesn't need me to hype him up! He's super confident in his abilities. No pressure coming from me at all. There is a whole host of young talent out there. The future looks very bright for cycling

@Rich Crompton I think you're overhyping him, I've seen this before where riders had a really good first part of their career but then people put pressure on them and they just vanish, just let him do his own thing.

They had a corona infection in their staff and got banned from the uae tour. Alpecin fenix decided to let him race only KBK and not both races at the opening weekend
